In the fall of 1984 UTEP had about 15,322 students, it included 12,691 from El Paso, 350 from elsewhere in Texas, 834 from other states, 572 from Mexico, and 875 from foreign countries.

Style of school: Bhutanese
S.H Worell's wife suggested the style ( the building structure has been in the school since 1917)
When the school was first built the school wasn't in Bhutanese but when their Fort Bliss building burned down in 1916, the style was changed in 1917.

-Mascot's-
First mascot's name was "Cylde" a burro. He was surveyed out in 1966 and replaced by Henry another burro.
1974: the name "Paydirt Pete" was adopted. 1980: mascot was re-designed to "Sweet Pete" (a more relaxed cute looking design) The first student to wear the costume was Jimmy Legarreta, the costume was made by "Roshu" of Hollywood, this company also made costumes for Disney and Hanna-Barbera. The next person to fill the boots of Pete was the first woman to be come mascot. Her name was Susana Perez. 1983: mascot was re-designed again to have muscles and smoke a cigar. 1986: Pete ditched the cigar. 1999: Paydirt Pete traded his mining helmet for a cowboy hat and a handlebar mustache. The next year (2000) Pete was redesigned once again, but to a scraggly worn out, ugly miner, with chubby cheeks and a thick, long beard. He was nicknamed "Deranged Pete". The mascot we know today was made in 2005. |

The Sun Bowl is the home of the annual U.S college football bowl game, currently sponsored by Hyundai. The first Sunbowl game to be held in the Sunbowl stadium was on December 31, 1963.
The Sun Bowl game along with the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl, are the second oldest Bowl games in the country, behind the Rose Bowl.

Movie "Glory Road, made in 2006 was made on the 1966 NCAA Basketball Championship. Don Haskins created the first multi-race basketball team.They were playing Kentucky State an all Caucasian team. The UTEP Team won the Championship.
